Do I need to prepare for a well-woman exam?

While you don’t need to prepare before your well-woman exam, you might want to think about questions you’d like to ask Dr. Greenspan about your gynecological health.

Here are some of the subjects you might wish to discuss.

  • Trying to have a baby
  • Your menstrual cycle
  • Menopause
  • Genetic testing
  • Safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases
  • Mental health issues, including depression or anxiety
  • Eating healthy and staying active

You also can talk to her about your relationships and your safety.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

Dr. Greenspan begins by taking a complete medical history. You’ll talk about your past medical conditions or surgeries, medications you’re currently taking, and any diseases that run in your family.

Dr. Greenspan typically performs a physical exam, which generally includes:

  • A Pap smear
  • Pelvic exam
  • Breast exam

The Pap smear looks for signs of cervical cancer. Depending on your age, Dr. Greenspan refers you to a specialist for a mammogram.
